Tip#1 - Pay the extra money for business class, check out the plane that you will spend 11 hours on nonstop before you go, or invest in some good sleeping pills. Several glasses of wine and some melatonin will not do it for you. The flight to BA from Tucson is looonnnggg -- 2.5 hours to Dallas, 10.5 hours to BA.
Due to a misunderstanding on my part (Amazing Race I would totally fail at), we were delayed in the airport looking for something called a "BIP car" in BA for a short while. I still have no idea what this is or what it means, even after contacting our apartment rental people and googling it on the internet. After a 1/2 hour or so, we gave up, but we did get to see 3 beloved futbol stars return home to play a national match against Chile on Saturday. Camera people and fans swarmed them and I got very close to the futbol player as they came right by me, and the people come up to them, and kiss them. Very affectionate are the Argentinians. The small head in the middle of the picture is one of the national soccer stars that the news media swarmed shortly after I ducked out of the path. The tickets for the national team were about $50 American, and we didn't get a chance to go because they played at the same time we left the following week. But after hearing the entire airport roar after a goal was announced, I am sure it would have been a crazy fun time.
Tip #2 - Visit the cat park in Palermo. You won't believe it.
Palermo has lots of parks, large, elegant, expansive parks. One of the parks is complete with statues, plants, paths, and lots and lots of cats. I have no idea why there are so many cats, and we couldn't figure out why the mention of "gato parque" wasn't in any guide books. The cats are healthy, pretty, and well taken care of. Its such a mystery.
Tip #3 - Learn as much Spanish as you can. My spanish was terrible and my cohorts later told me I sounded like Elmo trying to speak Spanish with a French accent. No wonder nobody understood me. Not everyone speaks english, and a little spanish goes a long way.
I think Dennis was already annoyed with me here. I had broken a water glass and had to explain to the waiter in Spanish that I broke it. I left him some extra pesos, so he could decide if he wanted to pass it along or not, but that explains the looks here.
Tip #4 - Watch your step.. The portenos love their dogs!!
Nothing is cuter than dog butt. And this photo is misleading. This may be the only stretch of sidewalk in BA that doesn't have any cracks, holes, or doo.
Portenos (people who live in BA) love their dogs, so much that they have lots of paseoperros, aka dog walkers to take care of their dogs. Every kind of dog imaginable, but you will usually see a Beagle, a German Shepard, a Lab, sometimes a Collie. As a result the sidewalks are less than clean. Some people clean up the dog doo, but for those of you who have been to Paris, it is very similar. Somehow the BA's figure out how not to step in the doo.
I know photos of food is gross, but this was the best steak EVER!!!!
Tiramisu, flan, coffee, crepe con dulce de leche and helado. Muy delicioso!!
Really great pizza that we got with Coke Light for $3 American that we took to a park to eat. Some lady tried to take a picture of us eating this in the park, maybe to take a picture of the gordo Americans.
Mike's hamburger complete with egg and ham served on a pita. This was yummy, and check out his food photo setting that makes the food look good.
This building is quite strange looking and is quite an eyesore, and may possibly be the ugliest . What is it? The Library!!
This building has trash all over the grounds which you can't see, and it looks like a bombed out building, and apparently it was never finished. We found out it was an engineering school.
